Increasing Competitiveness Of Japanese LCD Panels Through New Strategy

- Aug 23, 2016 -

Major LCD manufacturer Japan Display Inc. (JDI) has applied for financial aid from the government-backed fund the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ), its top shareholder. JDI is expected to ask for more than several tens of billions of yen from the INCJ.

Due to the rise of rival companies in emerging economies, the competitiveness of semiconductors, personal computers and other high-tech products that symbolizeJapan’s manufacturing prowess has declined.  Japanwas once a leader in the LCD field.

This money is intended to fund investment in plants and equipment to make products including organic electro-luminescent display panels, which are very thin and help save electricity.

Worryingly forJapan, overseas manufacturers that hold large shares of the global market for thin panels are ramping up their investment even further.  South Korean companies Samsung Electronics and LG, Sharp Corp., which has become a subsidiary ofTaiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. are flexing muscles and also invest billions in plants and equipment for mass production of organic electro-luminescent displays.
