LCD Panel Focus Shifting To High-end Smartphones, Japan Display Exec Says

- Sep 06, 2016 -

While prices for liquid crystal display panels for smartphones are sluggish, those for high-end panels are expected to pick up in the second half of this fiscal year.

Hiroshi Ikeuchi, executive officer of LCD display maker Japan Display , said he wants to focus on LCD panels for cars and virtual reality headsets.

However, with a series of new product releases expected before Christmas selling season, he expects the prices of high-end panels to pick up as early as the October-December period.

More than half of Japan Display's sales come from giant Apple. High-end models currently account for about 30% of the total panel market, but the ratio is likely to increase to 50% in over three years. Chinese manufacturers' active investment will intensify price competition, but he think they can still beat them with high-end models.

To reduce risk, they will expand the lineup of LCD displays for cars.

OLED displays are nearly double the price of LTPS displays. I'm skeptical of whether OLED displays will become the mainstream.
